One of the thigs that stuck out to me was how in the beginning he was destroying everything. He was like or he was a big monster destroying and eating innocent people. It was like he was very uphappy with "music" and his life and he just wanted to be a big bully. He didn't want to people to live life and have fun, he was just concerned with derstroying people.
What beowolf is basically saying is that he has come to destory Grendel. He is practically begging the king to let him fight him because he knows he will win. He is saying that if he happens to lose just let his belongings and his body pats be shipped to his Grandfather Hrethel. He knows that the monster will lose and he will conquer him though.
Apparently this wouldn't be the first time that beowolf went to war. He fought a war at sea and won. He risked his life for their country. They talk about how they wake up in the morning and how they have blood stained hallways from Grendel, because he is eating people. They talk about how religion and how gredel was from the pits of hell. Satan was from the pits of hell and thats who they believed Gredel was. During this time theytalked about alot of poetry and the book of Beowolf was just one big poem.
The night before his battle he had a huge feast. He wanted his soldiers to lie down and get some rest, but he couldn't becasue he was eager to meet Grendel. In defense when they are fighting his Grendel's mother attacks some of Beowolf's army andtries to defend her son. During this battle Grendel loses his arm in the process. So Beowolf goes to the lake where she resides and battles with her to. After the defeat of Grendel and his mom, he takes the had of Grendel to the king, and now he has another task in front of him and thats to go to war with a dragon because he stole a jeweled cup.
During the angelo saxons times they talked about alot of warriors and the Beowolf was a warrior who defeated bad guys. Beowulf spoke: "I am Hygelac's kinsman and warrior.I have undertaken many glorious deeds." Wilkepedia says "In the poem, Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, battles three antagonists: Grendel, who has been attacking the mead hall in Denmark called Heorot and its inhabitants; Grendel's mother; and, later in life after returning to Geatland (modern southern Sweden) and becoming a king, he fights an unnamed dragon. Beowulf is fatally wounded in the final battle, and after his death he is buried in a barrow in Geatland by his retainers."The way it compares to our modern day heros, look at spiderman. He fights the bad, and defends everyone, But he also falls in love. The only thing that happens with spiderman is that he flies. With him flying, thats was where they differ. Beowolf doesn't fall in love either though. Wilkepdia says "After misusing his newly-given abilities, which indirectly caused the death of his Uncle Ben, he becomes the heroic Spider-Man. Peter hopes to win the heart of Mary Jane Watson, the girl he has loved since he was a boy, and battles the villainous Green Goblin, who is the father of Peter's best friend, Harry Osborn." He doesn't even fly from building to building. Beowolf walks on land....and he also fights with his bear hands. He doesn't use all these modern day things that spiderman and other action heros use today.
In the beginning, he did anything that his king asked him to do and defeated anyone his king asked him to.He was tyring to basically defend someone who he knew was wrong. I think that he should have died though. It seems as if, once he got older, he decided to switch sides a little and go aganist the wrong person. I thought the older you get the wiser you get, but in his case it's the older he got the dumber he got...he was to old to be doing the things that he was doing. He should have been retired.
Anyone who does that really loves their country. He didn't have to but he did what he had to do. When you die trying to defend someone else that says alot about you. That means that you will go over and beyond what is required and risk your life for others. i think they honored him in the right way with jewels and things of that nature. If you ask my opinion i think that he was a true gangster!!!

Romantic period
The Industrial Revolution- During this period of time was where there were not only changes in the industry, but economically as well. These changes took place mainly in N. America and in Europe. This particular movement made a difference in everyones life. It influenced atleast one persons life in some way or another. It changed the the way peole thought, worked, or even lived.
It also increased the country's population. it helped many people that had come to the country to farm and grow their own crops. With them growing their own crops, they didn't hve to worry about diseases and they didn't have to worry about spending useless money within the gov't
On Feb. 1, 1793, France declared war on Britian and this war lasted for 22 years. By the time this war ended, Britian had control over S. Africa and the W. Indies.
Like for normal people was hard. I mean they went through so much with the war and it causes prices to rise and alot of people lost their family, jobs and so on and so fourth.
I mean look at peole today. To be honest i don't think that normal people during this time would have lasted. Today people are so into technology, that they don't understand the meaning of hard work. Like now with the economy like it is, it's like people are going crazy and they don't now what to do. Like for instants, gas...when people heard that we were running out of gas they quickly started going to the gas stations and started trying to fill up their gas tanks. Instead of American trying to peserve and save it, and saying that they were just going to limit where they are going to go, they decided to do the complete opposite.
During the Romantic period they where trying to express economic changes, political changes and expand peoples imaginations.
With political and economic changes, they were trying to express the different changes that their country was facing. With the french revolution and the parlimentary reform it was a big change during the romatic period. It help to lay foundations for Great britian.
Trying to expand imaginations, they wrote different stories about also known as lyrical ballads. Often times they were use to express how the author feels and its trying to get you to see out of the eyes of how they see things. it also talked about devesating break ups as well.
The poem that i wrote about is William Blake's poem, Garden of Love, And the gates of this Chapel were shut, "And 'Thou shalt not' writ over the door;So I turned to the Garden of Love That so many sweet flowers bore." and basically what i think he was talking about was a peace place like heaven where there angels and peace. I think that it is a good piece of poetry, because it lets you know what he was doing and it has a subject. It says where love lay sleeping and everything is calm.
He talks about how he went in the forest and talked to the animals and the animals didnt have to worry about being killed, and their also was a church. He talked about how there was a garden and the garden was filled with love. But at the end it also seems as if he might have been talking about a gravesite because he also talked about hoe there were priest and gravesites.
the next peom that i read was a poem by william wordsworth perfect woman. "And steps of virgin liberty;"
A countenance in which did meet yes i think that it is a good poem, it talks about how he found the perfect woman. he talks about how she is still a virgin and basically she just glides on air. How there is no one else like her and she is one of a kind. i do think that it is a good romantic piece because it lets you know how he feels about someone.
The poem by george gordon When we two parted." WHEN we two parted
In silence and tears,
Half broken-hearted
To sever for years,
Pale grew thy cheek and cold,
Colder thy kiss;
Truly that hour foretold
Sorrow to this." This was i think about a divorce, or either a bad break up. I think it to is also a good poem. it talks about how dramatic the break up was and how they didnt want to part but they had to, but you could tell they was deeply in love. It also talked about waking up in the morning alone and how hard it was.
the poem by Percy Bysshe Shelly Night was really confusing. "Death will come when thou art dead,
Soon, too soon--
Sleep will come when thou art fled.
Of neither would I ask the boon
I ask of thee, belovèd Night--
Swift be thine approaching flight,
Come soon, soon!" it seemed like it talked about death. it was an ok piece of poetry but it not romantic. I didnt unerstand anything that he was talking about.
The last poem by john keats To Sleep was ok. "Around my bed its lulling charities;
Then save me, or the passèd day will shine
Upon my pillow, breeding many woes;
Save me from curious conscience, that still lords
Its strength for darkness, burrowing like a mole" it really talked about death and how peaceful death should be. Death shouldn't be painful it should be something where you just close your eyes and thats it. no its not a good piece of poetry because its not romantic.
The Victorian Period
During the Victorian period Neopleon deafeated waterloo in 1815. During this time britain also had nothing to do with this. They didnt get involved until WWI in 1914. During this time the economy started to grow tramindisly. The Industrial revolution went through alots of ups and downs, dealing with depressions that took place for quite some time. New things were constantly coming about between new towns being created new health programs goods and jobs.
Queen Victoria came uponthe throne in 1842. She came upon the throne in the year that the country was going through a great depression. that had more than half a million people out of work, and majority of the families were faced with poverty. they found alot of dead children when they were working in these factories for 12 hours a day. Most of these shifts contained children that didnt even get to see daylight on Sundays most weekends.
Life for everyday people was hard. They had to work without pay and if they were getting paid it wasnt for very much. I think that most peole had to struggle to make ends meet and provide or their family the best way they could. I don't think the the children got many times to act as a child. I think they had to grow up rather quickly.
During the romantic period and the victorian period the biggest change to me was the industrial boom. You had some periods during the romantic period were things were okay, and during the victorian period it wwas like when Queen E went upon the throne she started to make people suffer. She felt that she was all for herself and no one else. She made these innocent children work in sweat shops and they had to time to be a child. They had to grown up to fast. it was like she was bitter and she wanted everyone to suffer because of it. One of the tings that caused this change is when she became Queen.
The poets in this time they tried to express religion, and policitcal causes and the abolition of slavery. They tried to help people to understand that slavery was wrong. They also help to try to let everyone know that religion was okay. She shpuldnt and you dont have to be afraid of expressing and letting people know how you feel. They wanted people to know what was going on in the country.
Read a poem from each of the following poets, and then write a short review of each poem that: 1) Summarizes its content; 2) Analyzes how it is a good example of Romantic poetry; and 3) Uses direct evidence from the poem to support the claims you make in #3 and 4. Each of these reviews should be two paragraphs. Check to be sure each response includes the information for which I am asking. This will save you time. You can find many examples on the Internet by searching these poets' names. It would be helpful to create links to the poems you are describing. You can do with the link button above. I can show you how.
Alfred, Lord Tennyson Robert Browning Matthew Arnold Thomas Hardy
What alfred Nothing will Die. "When will the stream be aweary of flowing
Under my eye? When will the wind be aweary of blowing
Over the sky? When will the clouds be aweary of fleeting? When will the heart be aweary of beating?
And nature die?Never, O, never, nothing will die;
The stream flows, The wind blows, The cloud fleets, The heart beats, Nothing will die." was saying in his poems was that nothing in nature will die. We will never die because we are a part of nautre. it is a good example of poetry because it helps to show his feelings for nature and how he feels. He talks about how the heart will continue to beat, and the rivers and things will never stop flowing.
basically what robert browning was saying was that nothing can compare to how him and whoever his other half is, how they feel about eachother. nothing is better than the feeling of how to people feel about eachother. it is a great way to show romanticism in this poem because its letting you know how they feel about one another. He talks about how the two hearts are beating and how nothing can keep them from eachother.
matthew arnold A Wish "ask not that my bed of deathFrom bands of greedy heirs be free; For these besiege the latest breathOf fortune's favoured sons, not me.I ask not each kind soul to keepTearless, when of my death he hears;Let those who will, if any, weep! There are worse plagues on earth than tears". Was basically talking about how when he dies he thinks no one will care. He knows no one will cry, because no one had ever cared about him..
It's a great piece of poetry becuse it shows how he felt and his emotions toward people.
The whole poem talks about how he will take his last breath and no one will weep.
Thomas's I look into my Glass "LOOK into my glass,
And view my wasting skin,
And say, “Would God it came to pass
My heart had shrunk as thin!”
was talking about how he looked in the mirror, and noticed that he was getting old. it expresses how he feel because he doesnt want to get old and he never thought that he would. He woke up one day and asked god, why, he sees all this wrinkled skin and wants to know why he is getting old. no, i dont think it's a good piece of poetry, even though he expressed how he felt it doesnt really tell how it has someting to do with him being romantic.

mentor log (August 27)
On the first day of my research project with my mentor, i went to the UGA library during class and from there i caught the UGA bus to my mentors apartment at 5:15 and went to her house. From there i took a shower and changed clothes. After that it was about 6:30. She showed me all of her memorabilia and i took pictures of that. She told me stories of her and how hard it was for her to get in (She classifies herself as a delta). So we left and then went to the Exchange where most of the fraternities and sororities and college kids live.
At the exchange the sorority known as the Deltas were having a meeting and they were talking about things like dues that were do and things that they wanted to do in the community to help out. They also talk about there next probate and what they should wear to the probate later on that night to support there "Bros" also known as Omega Psi Phi. So shortly after that i was introduced to all of the females of Delta Sigma Theta and we left to go and get something to eat.
There i asked them question about why they pledged, how they got in and what they thought of all of the other sororities and there "Bros". They answered all of my questions then they had had questions for me and some of the questions that they asked were things like what college did i want to go to? Did i plan on pledging and if so what"Soro" I told them i wanted to pledge Zeta Phi Beta or either Delta Sigma Theta.
Around 9 :45 we went to a probate of there brother fraternity called Omega Psi Phi. It was explained to me that the point of this was the coming out and initiation of the new members so people could see who they are and that they made it in. During this ceremony alot of people come out to see who is new and its alot of music, "stepping" and other fraternities come from out of town to see this. All the other sororities and fraternities come out to see this event and to support them. After and during the ceremonies there are different people walking up giving people hugs and asking them what they are doing after the probate.
Around 10:30 we went to springtree road where the Omega's Frat house is and there was a party for the new incoming members and they had food. All of the fraternities and sororities showed up to show there moral support, been then after left. I learned alot of what and why they do the things that they do and why they have parties and the purpose of sororities and fraternities.

The glorious revolution
1. Research The Glorious Revolution (sometimes called the Bloodless Revolution) online or in one of the textbooks. Write a paragraph summarizing what happened, and then another that explains why you think the event was so important.
The glorious revolution was also called the Revolution of 1688. This was the year that the parliments overthrew King James II of England. This Revolution is also known as the Bloodless Revolution. The Roman Catholic James II (1633-1701) fled france in 1688 and thats what begun the Glorious Revolution. Shortly after this, his brother Charles the II took over the English throne. When he took over the throne the Englishmen did not really like him. Charles II also made them not like him even more by not responding or even acting like her cared parliment, and by tolerating the Catholics and also by making alliances with the Catholic Powers in Europe.
I think that this is important, because it shows you how a King of 1 country can betray his country for another country, and that can cause alot of conflict within one country. This can cause the country to not respect you and them to have u beheaded and overthrow the Gov't.
2. Define "satire". Don't just copy and paste a definition from another source. Read the definition, and then explain it in your own words. Once you have done that, provide a few modern-day examples of satire (television shows, movies, magazines, etc.).
Satire is the using of deroggitory language to degrade of others. in other words to attack others.
Some ways that satire is used are sometimes in talk show, let's say Maury for example. You have guys on there that are there for DNA testing of a child that could possibly be theirs, they sit there and call the woman all kinds of names, and say they haven't slept with them and so forth. They make her feel bad about herself and makes her feel bad. Gossip magazines also satire others. Let's take Brittany Spears for instants, they make her look like a drug addict and an unfit mother of 2. They don't really know whats going on with her. They have her on the front of these magizines and have these nasty looking pictures of her.
3. Read "A Modest Proposal", which may be difficult at first, but if you stick with it, the message will become more clear. Once you are finished reading, you should write a short response to what you read (4-5 sentences), and explain how this is a work of satire.
The modest propsal was about how children should be out on their own by the time they are 1, and how some mothers are lazy and don't want to get a job they are just always looking for handouts. This shows satire beacuse it's making the mothers look bad, and making them look like they are the scum of the earth. It talks about how the kids grow up to be nothing but thieves and savages. How the mothers have more than 3 kids and continue to have more becasue they are good for nothing.
4. Read either "from the Diary of Samuel Pepys" or "from A Journal of the Plague Year" by Daniel Defoe, both of which can be found in the purple anthology. Once you have finished reading, write a 1-2 paragraph response to what you have read. Please be sure to include some direct evidence from the text to help show what you are responding to.
What i read about was how the plague disease broke out and killed alot of people. It was a silent death and most people didnt know that they had it. It was where people would get these big calluses that looked like blisters and would die like 6 or 7 days later. If i was in that situatuion i would have probably killed and hung myself one of the masters did in the story.
What do you think was most important to people living in this time? Write a 1-2 paragraph response to this question in which you use direct evidence from the texts you read to support whatever arguments you make.
The most thing that i tiink was important to me in these times was the plague disease., because it was a silent death and it was going aroung. You didnt know you had it until you started getting these blisters or what not. There wasn't a cure for it, so if you got it you just got it and there was nothing that you could do about. If that was me i would feel bad knowing that i was about to die and there was nothing that i could do about. Just like if i had a child, i think that is the most painful thing that i could deal with knowing that my child was about to die.
